01The short answer

Cocina de Mary is one of my favorite small local places for breakfast. It is just north of the Pemex, off Highway 19, next to the old fruit stand: a simple, family-run spot with excellent food, warm service, and prices that still feel like the peso economy.

At a glance

My take: this is one of my favorite go-to breakfasts when I am not worried about my waistline but I am watching my wallet. It is family-run, clean, casual, and has fantastic food for the price. Favorites: a cold refresco, the very large carne torta (90 MXN, about $5.14 USD), and huevos con chorizo (150 MXN, about $8.56 USD). What I paid today: 165 MXN, about $9.41 USD, including an energy drink. Payment: they took my card today, and I have paid by card here on earlier visits.

The covered outdoor space is clean and casual, with floral tablecloths, a small counter, and handmade flour tortillas. It has a real local feel and is an easy, delicious place to stop for breakfast.

I found this place because locals told me about it. Once I tried it, I kept coming back. For visitors, it is a good reminder that Pescadero's food scene is not only farm dinners and higher-end restaurants. A proper breakfast can still be filling and inexpensive when you know where to pull over.

02What I ordered

On July 25, I had the machaca de res burrito and the torta de carne, plus an energy drink. The burrito is simple, hot, and built around the flour tortilla. The torta is very big, absolutely delicious, and enough to make the whole breakfast feel like a deal.

The menu lists the machaca de res burrito at 35 MXN (about $2.00 USD) and the carne torta at 90 MXN (about $5.14 USD). I paid 165 MXN total (about $9.41 USD). The slip only shows the total, so the menu is where the individual prices come from.

04What I keep ordering

I keep coming back for carne tortas, huevos con chorizo, machaca and chorizo burritos, chilaquiles, quesadillas, strawberry licuados, and a cold refresco. A couple of earlier orders show the range:

  • April 19: quesadilla, two chorizo burritos, sincronizada, and two strawberry licuados, 370 MXN.
  • May 31: chilaquiles with egg, ham quesadilla, two strawberry licuados, shredded-beef torta, two chorizo burritos, tacos dorados, another torta, and a Coke, 890 MXN.

That is why this is a go-to: there is plenty here to come back for, and it is still easy on the wallet.

05The covered outdoor space and the people

Cocina de Mary has the kind of small-scale hospitality that bigger places cannot manufacture. The food is fantastic for the price, the service is good, and everyone has been super nice. The covered outdoor space is clean, informal, and an easy place to stop without making a production of breakfast.

I did not find this place through a big review site. I keep coming back because the food is good, the people are nice, and it feels like a real local stop instead of a production.
